Priorities. Focus. Commit. Act.

This is how you create your dream life

Several months ago I was in touch with an old boyfriend from the days when I lived in NYC and still worked in the fashion industry. After seeing my art and what I'm doing now he wrote, "Your work is really cool - it looks like life has taken you down an interesting and rewarding path. Few people get to do what they love for a job."

It was the word "get" in the last sentence that perplexed me. I thought, "Really? Why is that? Don't we create our lives? Isn't it a conscious choice?"

When I quit the fashion industry in 2002 to become an artist, teacher, and writer full-time, it was a conscious choice to create the life of my dreams. The journey has taken me in unanticipated directions and taught me to go with the flow. I've learned how to surf the ocean of life with greater ease and grace. It's also given me practice at getting back on my proverbial surf board when I get caught in a breaker. (And you wondered why I use the above image as my portrait?)

My life and art are about harnessing serendipity. And the challenges I've faced were worth it.

Because now my life has meaning.
Because now I believe in myself.
Because now I trust myself.
Because now I feel alive.
And I no longer struggle. I go with the flow.

What do you envision for your life?

Life is a wonderful buffet. There are so many experiences you could have that it's easy to run off doing things just because you can. Of course, you could also just stick with what you know. Or do nothing. Would any of those choices lead to a fulfilling life?

If you could live a "life well lived", what would it look like? How would it feel?

Achieving your dream life can be summed up in four steps:
1. Priorities
2. Focus
3. Commit
4. Act

What are your priorities?

Priorities answer the question, "What do I want?" The operative words are "I" and "want". It's not about what others want for you. The word "priorities" is listed first because you can't get what you want if you don't know what it is. And remember, it's not about what you DON'T want but what you DO want.

Oh, and it's not about what your head wants. It's what your heart wants.

And because sometimes it can get confusing, the way to know if you're on-track is by listening to how you feel. If you're gaining energy and feel impassioned, you know you're on-track. But if you're losing energy or feeling agitated or angry...you're off-track.

Choose your own path

You build a life. It's a staircase that you create one decision and one action at a time. It means you have to just trust and have faith in yourself.

In choosing your path you need to know your priorities, as they are what define your dream life. Since I wrote at great length on creating your dream life and living consciously in my book Breakout! Your Pathway to Success, I'll leave it there and move on to the next word: focus.

Focus and keep your eyes on the prize

Focus is important because, without it, you'll just run around in circles and get nowhere. If you don't know what you want and aren't focused on getting it, other people will be happy to tell you: what you should want, how to run your business, how to create your art, who to be, where to eat, what to wear... You get the idea.

Shakespeare said it best, "To thine own self be true." So stay focused. Also, pay attention to the people you attract in your life, as they are often road signs. If you attract people who are flailing in their own lives, ask yourself if they're serving as a mirror to remind you of your own lack of focus OR if they're merely serving to reinforce that you are, indeed, focused. Your heart knows the answer. Listen to it.

Commit to your priorities & dream

It's really quite simple: without a commitment from you to live your dream life, the Universe won't conspire to help you create it. Again, I wrote about this at length in Breakout! Your Pathway to Success so let's move on to the last step: act.

Take action.

A dream without action stays a dream.

Summary

Every day, take one step. It doesn't matter how big. It doesn't matter if the step is sideways or backwards. Just take the step.
